May 2010 Delegation- Time Travel, Oskarshamn

Thulas, Rosey and Howard participated in a Time Travel activity in Oskarshamn ( 26 May 2010) as part of their training days in Sweden.

Therafter they had FICA with Carina Wretlund ( Mayors wife and an active twinning member) at her home, followed by welcome dinner at Tormod Nessets home.

SHORT REPORT BY DELEGATION:REPORT ON TT TRAINING IN SWEDEN

Time travels is about doing, which enables learners to understand their history much better than just going through books or searching the web.The Time Travels that we participated in were well organized and the learners really enjoyed them and we also did.We were impressed by the set up at Eketorp (Oland) and how original it looked. The phases from Eketorp1,2 and 3 up to the present one which is divided into the western half and the eastern half as well as the south gate.

In all the sites that we visited, we could see the enthusiasm and commitment of the members of staff and this is what makes TT real and original. In our training we also discovered that our(S. A) history is more political and there are a lot of untold good stories of the past. These stories can help rebuild our country. TT is a nation building method which is relevant for the Rainbow nation of South Africa.

TT can help us to value our original history not only the political history but also the period before colonisation.If we document our oral history, this will help fast track transformation in our country while preserving our history with pride.

Thank you very much to Kalmar Lans Museum, ABF Sondra Smaland ,OSAK and The Port Shepstone Twinning Association for making this learning experience possible.

"History" - a democratic right

Yet, the poor and under privileged voice in the historiography of South Africa in many cases not been heard. Poverty is still widespread, the social differences are considerable and need to strengthen democracy. To own and be a part of his story is part of come from a social and cultural poverty. There is a deepening of democracy.
Against this background, the project supports the Palme Center All-Time History is a collaboration between ABF Eastern Småland / Öland, Kalmar County Museum, Oskarshamn Southern Africa Committee and Port Shepstone Twinning COMMIT. The project commenced in 2008 and will run until 2010 aimed at providing non-privileged people in South Africa a voice in the historiography through a so-called "time travel".

One of the projekansvariga is Ebbe Westergren, writers and museum pedagouge at Kalmar County Museum, which for over 20 years has worked with various organizations and institutions in over ten different countries with this concept.

- Simply put, it is about to dig into history and then develop forms of engagement and education for those who always fell foul of the official history, as the subordinate and suppressed, the colonized, "says Ebbe Westergren.

Concrete begins work to historians and archaeologists produce documentation of key historical sites. The material is summarized and then used for a so-called time travel, that is, a form of interactive history lesson in which people in different ways may återupleva and portray the story out of this bottom-up approach.

- I felt that South Africa is an ideal context for implementing the method. Nowhere else is the story so present and so it is clear that the group that held power, the white colonial power, also is the author of the story, he says.

Another Project participants are Tormod Nesset, president of South Africa Committee of Oskarshamn, who also previously worked with a similar "time travel" in the Western Cape, South Africa.

- To critically examine a history of unilateral depicted as the dominant group's history is therefore an important part of a larger process of reconciliation, says Tormod Nesset.

- Knowing his history is one democratic right because the knowledge and pride in their origin is a prerequisite for being able to look ahead. Similarly, one can conclude that an incorrect and discriminatory history becomes a tool for the continued oppression and marginalization. In cases where the story is clearly misleading and distorted, as in South Africa, these "time travel" play an enormously important role.

A NEED EXPESSED IN 2008 - ON THE MAIN TWINNING BLOG

WE HAVE MADE A START!

A CHALLENGE FOR ALL OF US!

There is a crying need for a professional, dedicated and credible " Our History Project" that seeks to research, record and publish for this and future generations the history of our region, especially the last 20 years. This should include our struggle against apartheid, the violence of the 1990's, the peace process, building democracy and not least economic history.

There are many, many stories of struggle and sacrifice, of pain and death, of hereos and heroines, of courage and success, of betrayal and failure.This task is now very urgent because many of the real life participants and other custodians of this history are fast passing on. Prince was one such example. Sipho was the other. Anderson Nyawosa from Shobashobana, a past delegate. Saggie Nair and not forgetting George Mbele.

There is the real danger that if we delay further, that when we do start, there will be no original sources any more. That would be a further tragedy and a grave disservice not only to future generations but also the generation that gave so much for all of us.
